![]() Absorb -> Immune -> Resist -> Neutral -> Weak.īlack Mage is definitely one of the better starter jobs. It lowers every target's elemental resistance by one level, e.g. Black Mage also has Geomancy, one of the best passive abilities in the game. The tier-1 spells can be cast every turn, and with the right support abilities, the tier-2 and tier-3 abilities can be used just as frequently. Thankfully, those spells are incredible workhorses. Seriously, that's it, just those 9 spells. Unfortunately, FFTA/2 gave most of those spells to other jobs, leaving Black Mage with only the Fire, Thunder and Blizzard spell families. They're usually packing all the damage and "nasty" spells: Fire/Thunder/Blizzard, Flare, Sleep, Toad, etc. Black Mage is one of those jobs that appears in every Final Fantasy game. Besides that, well, "lackluster" isn't quite the right word. Those stat growths! +10 M.POW and M.RES per level (+11 M.POW for nu mou)! You don't see growths like that in any other starter job. Growths: Top-tier magick growths, everything else sucks. ![]() And by "good ones" I mean "the ones that teach anything besides Cure." I usually start getting the good ones 20 to 30 hours into the game. And, for some reason, the staves they use are incredibly hard to find. Avoiding damage, such as by knocking out enemies quickly, is better than healing.įor some reason, the job actually got nerfed - it lost the Shell and Protect spells. You would think healing would be more useful as enemies get stronger, but by midgame I think you're better off equipping White Magick as a secondary ability set. the most powerful offensive magic in the game, locked behind the healing job. Just look at that Unlocks list! Illusionist, Seer, Sage. Their true value, as with every other starter job, is that they're a springboard for all the really good jobs. Healing is pretty useful, as few jobs have reliable or even useful self-sustain. Growths: Pretty good magick, low physical, low speed. Thief, on the other hand, is unremarkable (unlike its FFTA counterpart), though two fan-favorite jobs are locked by it. Most of the interesting magick jobs are locked behind White Mage and Black Mage, though those two are no slouches on their own. This happens to the target's MP as well as HP.Part 79: Starter Jobs 2: White Mage, Black Mage, Thief Job Roundup #2: White Mage, Black Mage, Thief If damaged on previous turn unit selected will be healed. If healed on previous turn deals damage to selected unit. ![]() Increases duration of buffs and debuffs on units within a small area. TIME MAGES use these powerful magicks to manipulate space and time. To Use: Master 5 Black Mage A-Abilities.As with most Mages, their Defense is almost nonexistent at best, but can be somewhat covered by using gimmicks such as casting Reflect to counter Magick, equipping a Ribbon which grants immunity to debuffs, and having Reflex to evade standard physical attacks. Halve MP will make all Time spells usable in one turn, although only Nu Mou Time Mages can learn it through the Illusionist job. In favor of the Arcanist all Gravity spells, Demi and Quarter have been renamed Gravity and Graviga, Time Mages learn Extend and Undo in their stead. Stop can also be lethal if it is successful as it not only leaves the victim defenseless, but also prone to having items stolen, being hit by the Arcanist's Death spell and other negative effects that would otherwise have low Accuracy and its duration can be prolonged by Extend. As with most Time Mages in the series, they are primarily viewed as a support job that buffs units, a classic combination is to cast Extend on multiple units at the start of a battle, followed by Hastega. They are available to Moogles and Nu Mou, but are better off with the Nu Mou, since the Moogle's Juggler Job has another, slightly more useful version of the Quicken and Stop spells and the special job Bard also has a chance to cast Haste with the spell Nameless Song. As with all Time Magics, the spells cause various status effects on the target, such as Haste, Stop, and Quicken. ![]() The Time Mage is a Job in Final Fantasy Tactics A3.
